Hello Wayne -

RJT>> enable the first serial port, etc. I hooked that modem up
RJT>> and tried to get a response out of it.

RJT>> Nothing.

WC> Too bad Rick Collins isn't still about, he was the modem
WC> expert wasn't he?

Yes, that would be an accurate description of R.Collins. I often
think "too bad so-and-so isn't around". Many have departed, some
permanently, but the crazies often return. :-\

--8<--cut

WC> Guess so. I need to complete the 486. Just a matter of an
WC> hour or two but I need to manage my time as well as decide
WC> if I'm going to move the motherboard to the larger case. I
WC> don't see myself installing any A drives in machines save
WC> one except possibly as a roaming USB type

Until you have a working/tested CD burner I would advise you to
have a working floppy drive. If not it will bite you one day.

--8<--cut

WC> Can't disable in CMOS? That's what I've done here. I've got
WC> a floppy drive but haven't bothered hooking it up.

You really should hook it up. If the system goes down you will
want to be able to run diagnostics rather than just guess why.

--8<--cut

WC> There was someone here complaining about the absurd cost of
WC> of an H.P. floppy drive but I've found they're just generic
WC> NEC drives.

That was me a year or more ago when my daughter didn't want to
replace her dead floppy drive in an HP because of the cost.
