You might just have a combination of bad "new" parts. A bad wire or two,
maybe a sparkplug which is sub-standard.  Combine all that and you've got
mess on your hands.

Nows the perfect time to install an HEI! You *will* notice a difference.
 Pull one from a 305, slightly faster advance curve than a factory installed
HEI in a 350.  Then change the vacuum advance to a 10 degree can (AC Delco
part number D1370A)
 But if you want to keep that old points ignition, whens the last time it
had fresh points? Hows the coil? Have you checked the dwell?  Hows the
condition of the ignition (run-9v or so) feed wire?  
Also, from another message about spark plug heat ranges.  Start off with
an AC44T or AC44TS.  The AC46TS is on the hot side. The AC43TS is good in
some applications, and a wee bit cold for most others. Depends on your
engine combination. Based on my own experiences of course. =)
