Well the slicks on hybrids are not all that "bald." They do have a definite
and discernable tread, rather like a car tire. There is tread which channels
water.
Now a road bike's 'tread' is apt to be hardly discernable. But with wear the
round surface of the tire becomes obviously flat. That is usually when they
need to be replaced. But my experience is that the more common problem is
that the tire becomes cut by road debris and must be replaced.
