Hello Roy -

CA>> Typical informational browsing is just reading screens
CA>> after they finally decide to stop loading (sloppy
CA>> webmasters with too many graphics).

RJT> Both of the HTML books I picked up recently mention this
RJT> as being a problem, and one of the two repeatedly hammers
RJT> on that point -- whenever he talks about things getting
RJT> fancier or feature- loaded he points out the load time
RJT> issue and the fact that the more "stuff" you add the more
RJT> likely it's going to be that some folks won't be able to
RJT> access the pages.

It's a valid argument but it's been beaten into the ground for
many years now and IMO doesn't belong in a newer publication
unless the guy is just using it for 'filler'.

RJT> I guess that's style over substance, or something. In any
RJT> case, those people are missing the point entirely -- that
RJT> the idea of all this is to distribute information. If
RJT> they're going to erect all sorts of barriers to people
RJT> getting that information, then they might just as well sit
RJT> on their own computers and play with graphic and sound
RJT> programs and show it off to their friends...

Owners of commerical websites want their website to look like a
beer commercial and you either give it to them or they go
elsewhere.

CA>> I use OPERA on my W31 and can turn off graphics loading
CA>> with just a 'click' at the bottom of the screen. ;-)

RJT> I remember that option in the original Mosaic browser that
RJT> I used, as well as the version of Netscape I ran under
RJT> w3.1. Later versions that I've used seem to hide it a
RJT> little deeper in the menus.

I've noticed it's not readilly available in most browsers.

RJT> I've heard lots of nice things about Opera, including from
RJT> some folks in here, but haven't gotten around to trying it
RJT> yet. Nice to know there's a version of it out there for
RJT> w3.1, though. I didn't know that *anybody* was still
RJT> developing software for that platform.

The W31 version of OPERA is _not_ being developed further but
some authors continue to compile W31 versions of their updates
to other Windows software.
