You've got it in one.

 It'a a ZENITH DATA SYSTEMS ZW-0200-02 laptop.  I ain't stripped it to
check on the chipset ( and really don't want to unless is absolutely
essential).

That was my first thoughts, but both  SMARTDRV & RAMDRIVE.SYS complain
that "No XMS memory manager installed"  and that is where my
knowledge ran out.

Never having used 286's I didn't know if one existed for a 286.
