The Braves traded David Lentz to the Pirates for saying:
DL> I would say the worst base runner is Luis Polonia. However I am willing
DL> to accept nominations for worst. My candidate has lead his league in
DL> being caught stealing on several occasions.
That's an easy one. Butler has actually improved his percentage in the last 3
years (with fewer attempts than the past) and it's STILL 7 points below
Polonia (.687 to .694). At the same stage of their careers, Butler's
percentage was .691 and Polonia's is .694 (Polonia's career percentage didn't
drop below .700 until he went to the Yankees. Butler's went below that mark
after his third season and has remained that way). You take away Butler's
last three years and his percentage was an even more woeful .676. I would say
that if Polonia had gone on to play with another team that allowed him to run
as much as he did in the past, his last three years would have been no worse
than what he had in the past and he'd have a more substantial lead on Butler.
Brett doesn't get "caught" as much as he gets picked off. He's been a real
air-head and he's been picked off a lot more than people think.
