There's a reason for that Mike.  Its because employers don't want
deadbeats on the payroll.  Actively participating in your own survival
indicates a willingness to earn your way.
Unfortunately, people DO get laid off and fired for reasons not their
own.  Someone said, "Life is a bitch, then you die".  While pretty
depressing and not true in my opinion, it is true that life is not
always fair.   It is in these times that one must dig a little deeper
into his own resources and find a way to get back up again.  Many times
that is made a bit easier with contributions from society.  This isn't a
guarantee and the only truly reliable resource is your self.  The pity
of it all is that many will not accept a position below their
"standard" in order to pick up and start over.  This truly exemplifies
the "classist" stuff that RB talks incorrectly about.
