1237ca36f5b2 tech Hello Roy - --8<--cut RJT> For textmode there's lynx and links, and they do okay as RJT> well. Why we need still more beats me. Apparently there are many recent college grads who see an opportunity to setup their own software 'house' and make a few dollars from the embedded industries who are looking to Linux for applications software? Development on Dillo seems to be at a standstill while waiting for the money. With the Mozilla gecko engine code being made available along with others the kids don't have to start from zero and can learn how browsers are coded by reading what has already been accomplished in the gecko code? Mozilla has at least one or two mini-browsers for embedded that they are working on last time I checked. I think one was called "Phoenix"? --8<--cut WC>> From the screenshots I've seen the Dillo browser is like WC>> having the perks of a GUI browser with none of the WC>> limitations or overhead. With only a "subset of HTML", no 'frames' support and no javascript support Dillo is where many early W31 broswers were when IEx was at v3. Many competing W31 third party browsers would fit on one floppy with no frames and no javascripting and would operate with only 4meg of memory. It appears to me that the 'group' is trying to sell Dillo as a GUI _interface_ for embedded use more than as a true all purpose browser for the WWW even after stating DILLO is for embedded at the top of the page and then denying that it is aimed at embedded further down the page. That it only requires 8 meg of memory is nice but as I've said W31 has GUI browsers that use only 4meg of memory with comparable (limited) abilities. RJT> Eh? Does it need to run in a GUI or no? ========== http://www.linuxdevices.com/articles/AT7153264029.html (top of the page) Jorge Arellano Cid (June 1, 2002) After more than two years of development since the project was founded, Dillo has now matured enough to become a very attractive component for embedded devices. Being the Dillo project's founder, maintainer, lead developer, and having a full time dedication for all of Dillo's lifespan, puts me in an excellent position to introduce the Embedded Linux community to the Dillo project. --8<--cut Dillo is a very fast, extremely small web browser that's completely written in C. The source and binary are less than 300KB each (currently, the binary is around 230KB). It is a graphical browser built upon GTK+ (GNOME is NOT required), and it renders a good subset of HTML -- excluding frames, JavaScript, and JVM support. Dillo aims to be a multi-platform browser alternative that's small, stable, developer-friendly, usable, fast, and extensible. Best of all, Dillo is a 'free software' project, released u under the terms of the GNU general public license (GPL). --8<--cut Note that dillo is NOT designed solely for embedded systems -- however, its extraordinary efficiency and low library dependencies are what makes it suitable for such environments. For instance, the stripped binary on an x86 machine is around 230KB, and the main library dependency is GTK+. Memory requirements are lower than for lynx at start time, and the low CPU performance requirements let it run snappily on a 75 MHz pentium, 37 MHz ARM (Psion), or 25MHz 486 with 8MB of RAM. --8<--cut (bottom of the page) The developers wish to make it known that they would like to concentrate on improving Dillo full-time, and for this reason are inviting potential corporate or philanthropic sponsors to contact them to discuss cooperation in accelerating Dillo's development. The code base is solid, documented, and clean, and backed by programmers who, after more than 2 years of work, are deeply familiar with browser technology and Dillo's optimized design. We have created this presentation to assist anyone interested in understanding the past and future of the project, especially for those who are in a position to fund further development. ========== The proverbial "bottom line" is that they want paychecks before they go any further with Dillo? > > , , > o/ Charles.Angelich \o , > __o/ > / > USA, MI < \ __\__ ___ * ATP/16bit 2.31 * ...
