But they're not 'abused' in HTML, they're used to enable more functionality
without breaking backwards compatibility. It's a bodge, something that
should have been considered at original design time. Just like many of the
bodges that exist in Java (for instance). See Rich's 'deprecated' example
for instance.

I think that C++ has the '#pragma' construct for that sort of extension, or
keywords with two leading underscores that are reserved to a particular
implementation and should be ignored otherwise. Not new ideas...
