RB>RT> as a share cropper to send me to college... he didn't pay a nickel of
>RT> it, but did keep a roof over my head while I went to school. (BTW, I
>RT> didn't have a scholarship or a grant either). Also, I've never been
RB>Ah, so you got your rent for free, ate for free, just deferred everything
>to a
>loan until you could get a degree and a good job.
Nope. Wrong assumption again. I worked till midnight at a job that I
could legitimately study while working. I worked weekends on the farm
paying Dad back for the rent and groceries. All the while, paying court
ordered child support. Incidentally, when I did get that "good paying
job", I BOUGHT the farm for Dad and Mom, at the fair market price, and
allowed them to live there rent free for the rest of their natural
lives. Damn patronizing of me wasn't it?
Now, just to really make you really feel warm and fuzzy, I WAS assisted
in my education. I used the Veteran's education benefits I earned while
spending a few months in a lousy corner of the world called Viet Nam.
> So, basically, your father
>worked *his* ass off,
Dadgummed right he did. And while doing so, taught me a valuable lesson
about life... one that I'm trying to pass on to my son, and one that I
fear you will never learn.
> and you chalk it up to your own personal reliance.
Yep, I think I did contribute quite a bit to my personal status in
society.
> So,
>let's see, how old are you?
52.
> Did you feel uncomfortable being in an
>environment
>that seemed to exclude a large portion of the population, namely blacks?
Nope. I'm in no such environment. During my early lifetime, I saw that
atrocity corrected. I've witnessed many blacks, yellows, reds, greens,
and purples exceed in their own endeavors unassisted by society. The
black race fought for and deservedly won equal opportunity. When they
are willing to accept and apply that opportunity, they are able to
achieve the same goals as whites or any other faction. What you
(apparently) and many others are missing is that the laws merely provide
the opportunity, what each person becomes is up to that individual.
RB>RT> their parents are the ones talking personal responsibility. They are
>RT> the likes of you who spout personal "freedom" while sucking from the
>RT> public trough and bitching because someone else
> unlike you, I don't depend on my parents for food or
>rent or
I hope I've corrected that blatantly incorrect assumption.
RB>RT> Now come on and tell us all again how classist our society is and how
>RT> it isn't fair that some are poor while some are rich presumably
>RT> because you are poor and don't want to put out the effort to get
RB>Yeah, that's right. Even if you don't think it is unfair, you can at least
>say that the way we work things now is not the only way to do it.
Yes, we have alternatives. We can work and succeed or we can not work
and fail to succeed. The choice is ours.
