Quite likely.  Telstra hang all sorts off amplifiers and equalisers off the
lines, and it's already been acknowledged (ref Arthur Marsh in Oz_Modems)
that many of these are detrimental to data calls.

You should see the Kingston exchange then - looks like an old stable (well,
almost) yet it houses some of the most up-to-date equipment available.

I've actually tried both, with similar results.

It's been quite a while since I called, so perhaps things have improved
since I last tried, but at the time, I was less than impressed with IBM's
demo of how OS/2 handles comms...

Probably.  For example, Russell gets solid 33600/33600 connects with David,
yet to me, he connects at 26400 most times.  Go figure.
