I saw a message from one of the engineers at MichNet, our statewide
dial-up modem provider. He said that, due to interoperability problems
with their GDC racks (the V.8 handling caused the modems to negotiate a
V.32bis connect, if they connected at all; looked like he was reading
right off the page of release notes with the 3/13/98 flash!), users were
advised to disable V.90 until the new GDC code was installed. The old
code hadn't even been installed in the Flint modem pool yet. :-) But,
he said that, due to the fact that modems have to be taken offline to be
flashed (Duuuhhh!), they'd be doing the upgrades in the wee hours of the
morning, and it would take six weeks to do it. They'd be announcing
what modem pools would be upgraded when, so we could avoid using them at
that time. But, he gave confirmed instructions on how to disable V.90
on the Courier, and what he *thinks* will work on Rockwell modems. So,
it's going to take a while for everyone to get new code out, and
depending on how big the ISP or whatever is, it's going to take a while
to get things done. MichNet has I don't know *how* many dial-up numbers
in Michigan, plus one in Washington, D.C. and one in New York City. I
have a feeling that somebody's going to be racking up the frequent flyer
miles going from area to area. :-)
