Generally 12v (but some only 9v and one particular Maestro modem I had
was only 6v).

That is why I say "not recommended".

Although the CIA's have an "absolute maximum" rating of 7v this is
primarily the input supply.. The signals from the modem are fed to the
I/O pins, which should never exceed the supply voltage.. in practice
though they do seem to stand a 12v input (at least for short periods).

They are "regularily" zapped with static charges of several hundred
(thousand) volts when people plug things into the ports and most times
they tolerate this ok too.

So I'll repeat it again, it can and does work, but is *not*
recommended.
