Hi Reece, RI> RG> In fact (although not recommended) MOST RI> RG> modems will work quite well on RI> RG> the C64 without any form of "interface" RI> RG> at all - these modems are quite RI> RG> happy with the C64's 0-5v signal levels. RI> RG> (If you don't believe me, try it) RI> The Modem might do OK with 0-5v but what RI> comes out of the Modem back to RI> the computer 5v or 12v? Generally 12v (but some only 9v and one particular Maestro modem I had was only 6v). That is why I say "not recommended". Although the CIA's have an "absolute maximum" rating of 7v this is primarily the input supply.. The signals from the modem are fed to the I/O pins, which should never exceed the supply voltage.. in practice though they do seem to stand a 12v input (at least for short periods). They are "regularily" zapped with static charges of several hundred (thousand) volts when people plug things into the ports and most times they tolerate this ok too. So I'll repeat it again, it can and does work, but is *not* recommended.
