subject: new hard drives

I have a link on my 'hard drives' page to information similar
to what has been posted here about reliability for hard
drives. Unfortunately all of the available information is
somewhat 'dated'.

With IBM selling all of it's hard drive manufacturing and other
hard drive manufacturers being gobbled up by the competition
the information is of little use unless it was collated
yesterday. :-\

I do know that CENDYNE pops up frequently on websites as the
least expensive alternative and that 'cendyne' is not a brand.
They use whatever they can get on the cheap and put their name
on it. It could be anything really.

With motherboards going into obsolescence within a few years
I'm not surprised that hard drive warranties are being reined
in to reflect the 'throwaway' nature of the beast?

I would also point out that running out to buy 120gig hard
drives with no reasonable way to make backups is "building a
boat in the basement" mentality. To take advantage of all that
storage would require at a _minimum_ purchasing two of these
hard drives, preferably three. I expect to read much "gnashing
of teeth" as people crash a 120gig drive with no backups. ;-)
