Another Senator Ready to Jump Off Hatch's Horror Bill!
-- Pressure from GOA activists results in third Senator deserting
                              Hatch
                    by Gun Owners of America
8001 Forbes Place, Suite 102, Springfield, VA 22151,

(Friday, January 30, 1998) -- GOA members and activists
spent a good part of last year lobbying their senators on the
dangers that the Juvenile Injustice Bill (S. 10) poses to gun
owners. Now GOA has learned that these efforts are bearing fruit
once again.
GOA recently contacted Senator Conrad Burns' office and
confirmed his intention to remove his name as a cosponsor of S.
10, the anti-gun crime bill introduced by Sen. Orrin Hatch
(R-UT). Sen. Burns (R-MT) marks the third cosponsor to remove
his name from a bill that, despite changes to it, could still
choke the very life out of the gun industry.
Senators Wayne Allard (R-CO) and Bob Smith (R-NH) have also
removed their names as cosponsors of the bill.
You guys should be rightfully proud of your hard work. U.S.
Senators rarely withdraw as cosponsors of legislation, so making
it happen three times is significant indeed.
In a letter to GOA staff, Sen. Burns reiterated his Second
Amendment concerns with the bill:
"Sections of the bill [S. 10] contain provisions that
would infringe on an individual's Second Amendment rights,"
Senator Burns said. "Although, Senator Hatch has informed
me that he intends to review these sections, I do not feel
that these modifications are occurring quickly enough and
have doubts that the changes will protect our Second
Amendment guarantees. For this reason, I have removed my
     name as a co-sponsor of S. 10."
ACTION:
Urge more cosponsors of S. 10 to jump off Hatch's Horror!
  * If your senator(s) is still a cosponsor of this bill, then
ask him to join the three other senators (Allard, Smith and
Burns) who have removed their names from this dangerous bill
that still treats unsuspecting gun owners like organized
    crime figures.
  * Contact the following S. 10 cosponsors at 1-800-522-6721 or
    202-224-3121: Abraham (R-MI), Ashcroft (R-MO), Bond (R-MO),
    Coverdell (R-GA), Craig (R-ID), Domenici (R-NM), D'Amato
    (R-NY), Enzi (R-WY), Faircloth (R-NC), Gorton (R-WA), Grams
    (R-MN), Grassley (R-IA), Hagel (R-NE), Helms (R-NC),
    Hutchinson (R-AR), Kyl (R-AZ), Lott (R-MS), Mack (R-FL),
    McConnell (R-KY), Murkowski (R-AK), Roberts (R-KS), Sessions
    (R-AL), Thomas (R-WY), Thurmond (R-SC) and Warner (R-VA).
Send a Western Union mailgram (1-800-651-1486)!
  * Are you at a loss for words? Are both of your Senators
hopelessly anti-gun? Then Western Union is the answer to
    both problems.
  * You can send pre-printed messages to both your senators --
as well as to S. 10 cosponsor (and Presidential candidate)
Sen. John Ashcroft (R-MO). As a Presidential contender, Sen.
Ashcroft has already begun answering mail from out-of-state.
So even if you have Feinstein and Boxer for your senators,
you can still pack a punch by going Western Union.
  * The Western Union mailgrams will give all three senators
documentation on the problems in S. 10. Moreover, the
message to Sen. Ashcroft urges him to get off of S. 10 and to
put a "hold" on the bill. You can send these three messages
for only $8.95, which will be charged to your phone bill.
Arm yourself with the facts -- visit GOA's webpage!
  * GOA has created a new section to track the progress (and
dangers) of Hatch's Injustice Bill. If your senator is
telling you that S. 10 has been fixed, then go to
http://www.gunowners.org/s10tb.htm to get answers to the
common "snake oil" being peddled on Capitol Hill.
  * While you're viewing the S. 10 section, check out the
several quotes from U.S. Senators and other authorities that
are blasting this bill. Everyone is singing off the same
page here. The very real danger is that the RICO provisions
in S. 10 could cripple the gun industry by encouraging huge
lawsuits brought by HCI against gun manufacturers -- all with
the intent of drying up the supply of firearms.
