Jeez, you're obsessed with standards.  Why the fuck would comms software
bother to have user configurable init strings etc if all modems were
identical?  They (all modems) are not identical.

What gives you the impression that the USR Courier adheres to the
"Hayes standard"?  Many of its S registers and other settings are
different from a Rockwell based modem.
