BTW, "Paul" is the nickname I tend to go by. :-)
RJ> G'day. I've been thinking of starting a BBS again.I've got Binkley as a
RJ> front end and Maximus but I need something to toss mail in and out.
A mailprocessor.
RJ> What do you use on TMTL?
Tobruk. Now ask me what I would recommend. :-)
I recommend you FREQ MINPDOS.ZIP or MINPOS2.ZIP (FREQ "FILES" too)
and set up with that. BTW, you should already have a mailprocessor,
otherwise you wouldn't be sending an receiving mail to me now!!!
What's wrong with whatever you're using now? And you shouldn't
really need MINPDOS and MINPOS2, because you are already set up
as a point?!
RJ> My BBS will have a Genealogy flavour with Zymurgy (beer brewing)
RJ> as a secondary level. Could you give me an idea as to your setup?
An important thing for me is to be able to debug problems. In
the end, I can debug Binkley down to every character sent or
received to my modem. In other words, I'm not reliant on other
people. E.g. I had a problem with Binkley just last night, and
coded around the problem the same day.
I had a hell of a lot of problems with Maximus as my BBS, and the
way I solved that problem was to force everyone to become points.
Now Maximus has so little use that I am not actually affected by
the bugs which are still there. So I am happy to run Maximus.
I intend to replace it with a program of my own, which just says
"Begin zmodem download NOW" and starts sending DEVIL*.*, but I
have not done that yet.
I also had a hell of a lot of problems with Squish, although the
main stuff was fixed with version 1.10, so I wouldn't be too
pissed off about running it, although there are still things
about it that piss me off. That is why I replaced Squish with
Tobruk, which I have source code to (I wrote it myself). I
actually still do use Squish, but that's merely to pack my
PKTs into arcmail bundles.
I use MSGED/SQ as my mail reader, which I also have source code
to, and I am also a part-author of. Oh, I'm a part-author of
Binkley as well (my port anyway).
All told, I'm probably not a good person to be asking how to set
up a general purpose BBS.
Oh, did you know that TML has a 10-minute login time limit, no
matter who you are? Actually, now that I've got a 28.8k modem
(and thus everyone should have one), I can see if I can get my
time limit for FREQs back down to 10 minutes, set by size of
largest file available for FREQ). [checks]. Damn! 12.4 minutes
needed to FREQ the 2.1 meg file. Roll on V34bis! That would
JUST make it. Actually, let me see if I could potentially
compress that file more efficiently... nup, she's as tight as
she gets. Oh well, I've put the time limit down to 15 minutes
anyway. BFN. Paul.
