In response to a message to Charles on ...
MS>CB> Many people believe that getting tenure guarantees a teacher a
MS>CB> lifetime job, even if the teacher's subsequent performance is lousy.
MS>
MS>I can refer you to "Thompson vs. Bd. of Education", the
MS>definitive tenure case in this state in which the state
MS>supreme court said just how lousy performance will be
MS>accepted before a tenured teacher can be fired. (292 N.C.
MS>406 or 233 S.E.2d 538). It is almost impossible to fire
MS>any tenured teacher pursuant to the standard in that case.
I can't think of too many reports that hold a North Carolina
education up as one of the better in the country, so I could guess
that the tenure system also stinks in your sate. As I reported
earlier in this echo, there were nearly 200 teachers brought up on
tenure charges here in New York in 1995-96, most of whom are no
longer teaching. If I recall correctly, a large percentage of those
who were fired went on to become respected lawyers ;-)
Perhaps you should move?
MS>CB> So they listen sympathetically to calls for abolishing tenure. But
MS>CB> tenure does nothing of the sort. It simply guarantees that there
MS>CB> will be some form of due process before a teacher can be dismissed.
MS>
MS>Tenure laws and their interpretation by the courts also
MS>say what the standards for retaining people will be: how
MS>bad is bad enough to get fired.
On a state-by-state basis. If you're not happy with the system
you're paying for, move.
