RJ> What do you use on TMTL?
PE> Tobruk. Now ask me what I would recommend. :-)
RJ> Ok. "What do you recommend?" Just joking! What i need is the program
RJ> that you use to unpack the incoming mail and then toss it into the BBS
To unpack my mail (*.MO0 etc to *.PKT) I use polyxarc, available
from here.
To toss my mail into the messagebase (Squish/*.MSG only) I use
Tobruk.
RJ> (whatever flavour) message bases. I used to use FroDo as a front end
RJ> with QuickBBS but cant remember what I had to do the tossing.
Most likely FMAIL. I have that available here too.
PE> I had a hell of a lot of problems with Maximus as my BBS, and the
PE> way I solved that problem was to force everyone to become points.
RJ> Have you doco'd the bugs you found? I wouldn't want to get into any
RJ> "discussions" with you about whether something is a
feature or a bug
RJ> e.g. Spirit modems;8-}
Basically no, and they weren't all necessarily bugs. Of the top of
my head there was:
1. QWK pointers being reset randomly
2. Dates being reset to midnight because they were supposedly ahead
of time (they weren't).
3. archivers were failing because of a lack of file handles, even
after running maxfh which was designed to fix that bug
4. It managed to get some traps, can't remember the circumstances.
The problems most likely are still logged in this message area
(LOCSYSOP). If you want I could zip up the whole area and you
can search for them yourself.
PE> about it that piss me off. That is why I replaced Squish with
PE> Tobruk, which I have source code to (I wrote it myself). I
PE> actually still do use Squish, but that's merely to pack my
PE> PKTs into arcmail bundles.
RJ> Can I try "Tobruk"?
Sure can. You can even sell it, use it as the basis of your own
commercial product, etc etc.
PE> All told, I'm probably not a good person to be asking how to set
PE> up a general purpose BBS.
RJ> I DIDN'T SAY THAT!!!!
Or any BBS even. If you follow what I do you will end up with
something that I think is absolutely the best way to go, and
makes perfect sense to me, but others usually can't follow the
logic.
E.g., why are you wanting to run a BBS instead of making everyone
become points? What do you see as the advantage of the BBS?
Points are automatic and the most efficient way of getting files
and messages. The only problem I can see for you is if:
1. You want to get fidonet mail AND
2. You don't want to have your modem online from 4-5 am AND
3. You want other people to receive the mail as points.
You basically can't do that with fidonet technology as far as
I am aware. You might be able to do it if you ran your own
mini-network and used a gate, which would allow you to use
your point address.
RJ> I'll FQ FILES and see if Tobruk gets a mention.
It's there. BFN. Paul.
