'gdb -core=core'  will tell you which program dumped the core file and
should tell you where it broke (from what I understand). But I still
cannot get the symbols needed from assembly sources, yet gcc -g seems to
work fine on C source. This is a mystery to me, maybe I'm just not
understanding what a "symbol" is.

That's what was meant alright, but the other day I got an SVGA machine up and
still get the segfault. 
BTW, I found what looks like an excellent debugger for Linux Xwindows
called ddd.  Now I need a bigger monitor.. ;-)
