VP certainly does give you access to the COM ports.  You can either use the
Port[] array as in Borland Pascal, or you can use the DosDevIOCtl API call
if you require a more sophisticated approach.

I am not sure I understand in which way SP (which does not support the Port
array) is superior to VP in this respect - can you clarify, please?
