Stan, you do have something of a point there.  The general formula for
HF antennas doesn't take into account the diameter of the element,
because it's a tiny fraction of a wavelength.  But at VHF and above,
this changes.  There is a formula that takes it into account.  It is (or
used to be...) in the ARRL Handbook, among other places.
