When you boots up eCS 1.1 and your OLD system is NOT LVM aware you
have to use LVM to make it LVM aware. As this actions does nothing
with the data but writes some extended information on some unused with
fdisk places it is harmless.

In that way you creates volumes from partiton already existent. A
volume is nothing than new logical level on top of the physical level
you knows as partiton. When asked for a volume type you'll answer
always compatible here because as the partiton already exist it should
be compatible to your old system.

The trick is: you can hide any partiton you don't need access to
currently. You unhides it again when you assignes again a drive letter
(any from the list of free ones).

As your OLD system is NOT LVM aware it will still ignore the drive
letters and even the new hide mechanism, as FDISK is not informed
about that.

On other hand when you boots up the old system you may get trouble
when the new disk is mounted and has primary partitons on it! That is
because the old system will find any primary partiton on any disk
attached and assign it a drive letter.

The new system (eCS) has no mechanism to assign drive letters
automagically. So hiding partitons or assigning drive letters of your
choice on them does not affect anything - except that a partiton that
is hidden from eCS is not shown. So C: on the second disk shows as C:
anyway, C: primary on the first disk is NOT shown when it is hidden
from OS/2.

Be sure that your NEW disk is mounted as the first (the bootable) disk
before you tries to install wincrap or linux! Because both knows
nothing about the new scheme LVM uses to assign drive letters.

On the eCS CDs are not only readmes but an LVM.INF. You should read
that before you starts to work with LVM. You may even boot from CD 1
and go through the installer to the point where it will fire up its
(mini)lvm and then when it is up press F1 and start reading.

LVM and MINILVM are designed in a way that you can even play around
with it without changing anything on disk until you gets asked for:
When you ends LVM you will be asked if you are willing to save the
changes. When you here says NO then not a single change gets written
to disk.

Then don't wounder when no reboot is required. That is because LVM can
do many things with the disk without reboot fdisk was unable to do.
