subject: Smallest Fast Drive - Low cost

Greetings,
I just found an interesting Winchester Disk Drive situation. The
Seagate ST51270A EIDE drive is being discontinued. This is the Updated
replacement for the ST31270A and the last and largest in the series
(540sl, 851sl, 1080sl & 1270sl), the others are already gone. They are
the smallest, fastest, quietest 3 1/2" drives ever made. Introduced in
January 1996, they already stopped production at the end of October !
Interface Fast ATA-2 w/ LBA & PIO Mode 3/4 support
       Size .74"/19mm H x 4.0"/102mm W x 5.0"/126mm D
       Weight 12oz/340.2gr
       Capacity 1283 Megabytes Formatted
Reliability 300,000 power on hours MTBF
Factory Warranty 3 years parts & labor
Power Requirement 3 watts Idle/ 0.5 watts Standby
       Acoustic Noise 30 dBA
       Spindle Speed 5400 RPM
Track to Track Seek 2.0 msec
       Average Seek > 10.5 msec
Data Rate to Buffer 9.0 Megabytes per sec max
Data Rate Buffer/Host 16.7 Megabytes per sec max
I checked around this area(California) and then called all over the
US and out of 60+, found only a few that had any left:
        StarQuest (800) 945 - 0202
        $199
        DataTeck (800) 760 - 1160
        $204
        Micro Pro (800) 353 - 3003
        $205
        Net Express (800) 333 - 9899
        $209
I just got mine and did a quick test, I found the Average Seek time
to be about 9.5 msec. These also have all the Industry standard
mounting bosses, 6 on the back & 4 on each side. So even being much
smaller, they will mount anywhere a 1" Low-profile or 1.625" Standard
3.5" IDE Drive fits. The 1st Disk Drive of any kind, that I have found,
that I can not hear over the fan hum. I also includes a copy of the
latest 32bit VXD for 32-bit Disk Access in Windows for Workgroups 3.11.
Seagate just bought Conner and they are now selling a Conner drive
as the ST1275A, replacing the ST51270A. It is a physically larger size,
3600 RPM, 14.5 msec drive,(this is progress?) do not be fooled by this.
                                                    Please to enjoy
P. S. (You also get a free copy of OnTrack's Disk Manager 7.11 !!!)
