CJ> He seems to have slowed down. I'm only mildly aware of what's

CJ> Sally, do you know?
He and his first wife, Charlotte, came to visit me in Chicago in
1956 or so. He was then in the army stationed at Fort Knox. They
had spent every dime they had and needed money to get back to the
base on time. He sat down at eight in the morning and wrote a
story. Around noon I drove him to the Near North Side where Playboy
was then located. I waited in the car. He was back in ten minutes
having sold the story for an amount that boggled my mind ($500 I
think -- large money in the days when sf magazines were paying a
penny a word). On such experiences does confidence rest.
I suspect he is not very hungry now but I haven't talked to him
about it. When we talk it is mostly of old friends.
