I use Concentric Net, and when asking them about acquiring a
UUCP account, they told me that because of the reasonably
direct access to the UNIX server itself, UUCP accounts
had proven to them to be major security risks. I am probably
not using the correct terminology, but I trust you understand
what they meant, if not the exact reasoning behind it.
I don't really know much about it, but am trying desperately
to learn, and am just simply lost in the docs. I have read
so many docs about fido internet gating that I can't even
keep straight what does what... At this point, I am getting
my FIDO feed via PPP using batch files, a program called
FD2FTP and calling the provider manually to get/send the
email. What I need (other than an understanding of what
all these programs do exactly and how to make them do it :),
is a program that will create an email message and attach
(not uuencode) the files in a particular directory to it.
I am sure that I am making things hundreds of times more
difficult for myself than I need to, but since my ignorance
abounds, I must attempt to use what I understand best... :)
I would appreciate any detailed info that anyone can
provide (now you are all sitting back saying "Well,
stupid, if you give us some specific questions, we
could answer them... :).
Well, since my ignorance abounds, I will give what info
I can. I am running a 486DX2-50 with OS/2 Warp Connect,
Renegade v05-11, InterMail and InterEcho. I have the
IAK for OS/2, but for some reason SENDMAIL won't work
correctly. I am reasonably sure that it is simply a
misconfiguration on my part, but I simply cannot find
it. The TCP/IP stack works and I can use Web Explorer,
but when SENDMAIL tries to start up, it tells me that
the TCP/IP is not running, even though I can receive
email before or after SENDMAIL tries to run. I just
recently found a MAJOR misconfiguration booboo that I
made in trying to give applications mega-memory in
the settings. Things get upset when you try to pass
out more memory than you have (which btw is only 8
meg). Well, enough babbling, if this is not enough
information to at least prove that I don't know my
butt from a hole in the ground, let me know what you
think... :)
