Since that's going into a linux box, much of what I'm going to be starting
out with on there is coming from installation cdroms. After that, what
needs to get backed up can be done on the cd burner, which I have yet to
burn any cds on, even though it's been in there for quite some time now...

One of the reasons I want to be able to bump my drive space seriously *up*
is so I can take a lot of what I have here on vinyl and tape (music) and
put it into the computer... I don't intend to dispose of that stuff
afterwards, either.

Yeah, I have a QIC tape and it's not even connected, nor have I run the
linux software to operate it yet, even though it's been in that box since
1999 or thereabouts. And forget about floppies, I gave up on using
floppies for backup after I got to needing something over 100 of them, and
things turned out to be less than reliable...

Also got a couple of "bigger" tape drives, QIC02 in the one
case, similar size but SCSI in the other case, but the biggest tapes I
have for those (and I have a good-sized box of them in assorted sizes) is
only capable of storing about 256M, uncompressed. That's 4 of those for
1G, so if I end up with 40G of drive that's 160 tapes! More than I have
on hand here or want to bother with, for sure!

I also have *one* tape that's in that form factor that claims to store
1.2G, and can get my hands on some more of those, but don't have a drive
that supports them. Even still, that's a lot of tapes.
