They weren't perfect at all, just sufficient bandwidth to handle 14400
symbol rates without problem.  28800 is pushing the capabilities of ANY
twisted pair to its limits though.

Nothing to explain.  Each time you call, you'll get a completely different
physical path for the call.  Nothing strange about that.

And my second call to your M34F was 28800/28800.  The first one connected
at 26400, then immediately dropped carrier on me.  Check your logs.
