subject: Soaking egg shells ..

DB> I read that if you save egg shells with your water in a jug and then
DB> put it in with the flower water and it is very healthy for your plants.
DB> I also remember about just plain shells. My question is::::
DB> How much water and egg shells, how long to let the shells sit in
DB> the water, and then how much regular water to add to the shell water??
Egg shells have a *very low rate of water solubility. That's why they
work so well in protecting the animal within. They are a permeable membrane
that allows air and moisture flow back and forth between the embryo within
and the world without, but are designed to stand up to the elements.
Soaking egg shells in water would take a *very long time to break them
down and the results, if any, would be negligable. The better, or easier,
method would be to place them in a plastic bag or between two sheets of foil
and then to crush them very fine with a rolling pin. Then mix this powdery
substance into your soil.
