DD> Neat site - thanks for posting. You are correct that it
DD> takes a while to load. I thought my browser had locked up on
DD> me. Bv)= Once loaded, though, it does fine.
Hi Dave,
The site content has ballooned since 2010. The slowdown is probably due to the
Postcard/images collection. Site is actually 3 separate databases, as I have
already explained in another post. While there are still just 36 separate posts
of recipes, it may be wise to move them to one of the other databases so that
searches for an ingredient could go faster.
DD> The nostalgic news articles are a nice touch. Especially
DD> that first one
DD> "COWS ON A DRUNK - [Welland Tribune, 25 November 1898]..
Nice. There are many other humorous articles in the EVENTS section. Look for
the matching "Posted in HUMOUR" link at the bottom of that article, and it will
pull up all the related articles.
DD> You'll likely get some comments that the "FOR THE WOMEN
DD> FOLK" header is sexist. But that's the way things were back-
DD> in-the-day. Bv)=
I don't see any sexist (as in negative?) ideas in the title. The title could
also be taken to specifically identify a recipe that just "the women" would
prefer. But I am just the messenger. The articles are all transcribed as when
first published. The operators of the site, S+B, would be happy hear your
comments. A login is not required. At the end of every post is an option to
leave a comment.
DD> Are all of the recipes text only like this one?
DD> CORNED BEEF HASH: Put in a large frying pan one ounce of
DD> butter, when hot add four ounces of potatoes and six ounces
DD> of corned beef, both cut into three-sixteenths of an inch..
For now, yes. That is probably how they were printed in the newspaper back
then.
The whole idea of "cut in three-sixteenths of an inch squares" would be pretty
hard and tedious for me. Today, I would just CHOP whatever into bits! But my
mom was very particular and precise just like that when she prepared the smoked
bacon for mini meat rolls that Latvians would call "Piragi". The bacon was
indeed cut into tiny "cubes".
DD> MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.06
DD> Title: Roast Beef Hash Categories: Beef, Potatoes Yield: 8
DD> Servings
DD> 1 1/2 lb Cold roast beef; chopped 1 lb Cooked diced potatoes
DD> 1 lg Onion; grated 1/4 lg Green pepper, stemmed, - seeded,
DD> diced 1/4" 1 c Beef stock or gravy 1/3 c Tomato paste Salt &
DD> fresh ground pepper
The modern recipe sure bumps it up a notch or two in creativity with more
spices and flavorings.
