JB> They're just smart enough to know you know the
 JB> shortcuts.

AH> Phooey! I was hoping they'd noticed other
 AH> attributes too.... ;-)))

JB> L!!! You have many attributes to which I can
 JB> attest to.

AH> Yes, I also know the location of various benches & large
AH> rocks & low- lying walls & where one can sit for awhile... [grin].

Me, I just gravitate to the nearest clearing. Much easier than finding a bench.

AH> To some folks a cane may indicate you have something in
AH> common with them, while to other folks it may be a turnoff.

How people assume that if a stick doesn't work, you can automatically jump into
a chair...

AH> I'll have more to say about that later. Meanwhile,
 AH> thanks.... :-)

Da nada.

AH> Sure. The idea is to force the customers to walk
AH> past a whole lot of other stuff to get to what they came
AH> for, in case they might add something else on impulse! We
AH> have a large chain store in our neighbourhood like that.
AH> While its name seems to mean it's a drugstore, the pharmacy
AH> is in a discreetly hidden corner at the back. Go straight
AH> ahead through seasonal merchandise, turn right
AH> ... continue on past the groceries & the baby needs... then
AH> hang a left between the vitamins & the weight loss
AH> products. Or make a hard right past the candy & pop, turn
AH> left at cosmetics & continue straight on through personal
AH> care to the desk behind vitamins. All of their stores are
AH> laid out the same way... (sigh).

And if they don't do it, somebody else will. Then everybody will be out looking
for a new job.

I now tend to scurry all the way to the back for my milk. Grab some eggs on the
way to the pharmacy, and head straight to the till. If I have enough in my
fridge, I'll just 'borrow' a magazine, and wait at the pharmacy.

AH> Yes, I find myself doing a lot of consciousness-raising as
AH> well. One of my standard lines is "Will you move [surplus
AH> furniture you've stashed in the hallway between here & the
AH> washroom]... or shall I do it?" I'm sure they won't like
AH> what I'd choose to do with the stuff, and they usually
AH> recognize that! In most cases they're willing to help when
AH> they understand the problem. They just haven't thought
AH> things through. Or the person who designed the building
AH> didn't allow enough storage space or whatever & they're
AH> caught in the middle. You may find as I do that you often
AH> have to be quite direct about such matters.... :-)

/-:

AH> Well, it's a start. The number of mandated spaces is only
AH> about half the number which seems to be required... Dallas
AH> checked out the facts & figures recently, so I know this
AH> isn't just a figment of my imagination. They may have a
AH> lot to learn as yet. But there's an indication they may be
 AH> educable.... :-)

(-:

An ordinary citizen, I understand their ignorance. When I attend an office, or
call a 'help' line, and they know nothing that will help me, I know that there
are cracks in the system, and I try to inform the worker of the problem. I
don't try to bash them over the head with it, unless they become snarky with
me.

AH> I find the disapproving stare useful in some cases too....
 AH> ;-)

I think I mentioned to the supervisor that it wasn't funny, pointed out the
stick, and asked for his number for the next time I need milk.

 JB> C) Good thing I don't get to "C" too often.

 AH> Uh-huh. I've torn a few strips off people I barely knew &
AH> found they actually respected me for it... but in general, I
AH> wouldn't recommend that! You may have to shake others up
AH> in order to get their attention. At the same time,
AH> however, people tend to learn better if they're not feeling
 AH> threatened.... :-)

I'm a fit looking fellow, at 5'10". The only time I try to calm fears about my
abilities for self preservation, is with uniformed security. I've notice a LOT
of undercover security key into me, but I let them feel like Dick Tracy. It
seems to make them feel better that they've pulled a fast one, but not once
have I been stopped for a check of my baggage. Whether or not I've been
targeted as a shoplifting suspect, I have no need to shoplift, but they don't
know that. How can you blame someone for doing their job?
