CB> MS>CB> Many people believe that getting tenure guarantees a teacher a
CB> MS>CB> lifetime job, even if the teacher's subsequent performance is
CB> lousy.
CB>
CB> MS>I can refer you to "Thompson vs. Bd. of Education", the
CB> MS>definitive tenure case in this state in which the state
CB> MS>supreme court said just how lousy performance will be
CB> MS>accepted before a tenured teacher can be fired. (292 N.C.
CB> MS>406 or 233 S.E.2d 538). It is almost impossible to fire
CB> MS>any tenured teacher pursuant to the standard in that case.
CB>
CB> I can't think of too many reports that hold a North Carolina
CB> education up as one of the better in the country, so I could guess
CB> that the tenure system also stinks in your sate.
Tenure here is a frequent target of newspaper editors, state legislators,
and talk show hosts. (Yes, the state's schools generally stink, and the
editors and politicians blame tenure.)
CB> earlier in this echo, there were nearly 200 teachers brought up on
CB> tenure charges here in New York in 1995-96, most of whom are no
CB> longer teaching.
Most fired tenured teachers here give up without appealing, but the
appeals-court cases suggest that they'd have won if they appealed. They seem
to give up out of a (belated) realization that they really don't belong in a
classroom.
