silly arthur, havent you figured out this one yet, its a modem with a cable
coming out of it, usually the end opposite the end called the facia panel, as
best as i can work out
on another side of the briquet called life it is a poor mans (ok ok persons)
isdn adapter. none of the benefits, only some of the costs and more troubole
than isdn will ever be. we here have a choice of two competing, the snensible
ones running at 10 mb full duplex (synmetrical, or a really nasty afair
running
at 10 mbit in and 760 kbit out (back channel i believe its called) half
uplex
asymetrical .. as if you'd never guess. thier is usally one 'server box' in
the
local area, here its equivalent to a 'suburban block' the good news is if its
a
slow night and no good movies on the pay channels of the bradband
istribution
network that your 'toy isdn' is connected to you get all 10 mbit, as the
interest heats up and madonna or the futty comes on and more people turn on
thier set top boxes you get les and less of your original 10 mbit ... flip a
few pages and get to the interesting bits .. untill you have so much traffic
coming down the coax you get saturation .. i don';t what happens to the tv
images but your ip gets gastric reflux and burps ip packets all overy your
hard
disk and you don't get out untill some service man comes out to either rest
the
curcuit breakers in the local box, or some of the people watching the madonna
futty fest get tired and go do someint productive like talk to there children
or actually read a book.
tcp/ip was never desigend to run over asymetrical circuits, it were desidned
for them thar funny leased lines they have in that place over the pacific
sewage trough where somehow the americans converted 64k isdn channels into
6k
channels and called it t1 instead of e1 .. long story arthur, i got lost
reading the book, i ma waiting for the movie to come out.
this by the way was the off the cuff short version.
cheers
Jonathan
... i do what i can, with what i have, are you able to say the same ?
