note: this can result in unexpected texts. eq. take a file without EAs.
query the EA's and you get an error buffer-underflow. and the msg in
oso001.msg says 'filename too long'. there are also semafore errors and the
oso001.msg says 'format failed'. just look in bseerr.h and look in the
/*MSG:...*/ comments.
