| subject: | 286 XMS memory |
Hello Niels, >> NP> I put the lines in CONFIG.SYS .... >> NP> DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS >> Oh. Something very silly going on there in that case. >> Either a CMOS option (like the A20 or EMS settings) are not >> configured properly, or it may be a chipset specific problem. NP> The A20 handler was in there, so I think it was a chipset problem. I bought a 386SX a few weeks back to use as a network backup PC, and give me some HDD space back on the other PC's... I put it all together, formatted it's drives, etc, then went to install Win on it... the install bombed out 'cos it coudn't access the XMS. It turned out the CMOS setup in it defaulted to settings that suited EMS, and disbling all the "EMS" entries and toggling the "A20" setting saw it able to take Win OK... that's why I mentioned the above in your case. NP> Fixed it with COMBI.SYS and _it_ didn't even need an XMS manager. Never heard if it :) >> You'll probably also find, until you find the cause, that it >> won't run Win 3.1 either. NP> With only 2 megand an EGA - LCD screen, I hadn't even considered NP> _that_ an option ;-) Yeah, don't expect Pentium-class performance :) It will run it though - I can remember putting a hard drive in my 640K XT and loading Win on it as a "lets see what happens" type exersise... considering it was an 8Mhz 8088, it worked suprisingly well ;-) >> No worries. Did you get the file? NP> Haven't even got the name of it yet. NP> Once I have a name it will come with the next mail pickup. Great. Don't pay out my lousy scan too much now...
