I can understand your disgust. All I know about the subject
is what i learned in High School, and later in the service,
Our school library had a large collection of autobiographies
and other non-fiction relating to the Prisoner Of War experience
in Germany and Japan {and other countries controlled by them} .
Two that stand out after all these years are the Colditz
Story, and the The Vaulting Horse, The latter the best example
of the Purloined Letter technique for hiding a tunnel enterance.
I may have the titles wrong, but I could locate the books if our
library here had them {they don't}. Another wonderful book is
"Most Secret" by Clayton Hutton, a description of the escape
and evasion aids constructed in WW II. Very informative, and
a topic shrouded in justifiable secrecy. There has been precious
little published about E&E, and the tools provided, but I have seen
faint hints that there are some "toys" out there.
... This BBS has achieved Air superiority.
