That has actually been discussed at great length in the USR echo, and as
far as I can recall, it transpires that the stats won't show a retrain
request unless it has specifically been granted by the remote modem.  Don't
quite recall the precise detail, but if the remote denies the request, the
stats remain at 0.

That particular subject has long since scrolled off my message base, so I
can't quote Joe's reply re the exact sequence now.  But yes, now that you
mention it, that particular V.32bis problem may not be verifiable from the
stats after all.
