Thanks Bob.  Even the web page is a bit unclear (after all, I suppose why 
would anyone flash back to earlier code, eh?).  
My thought was that perhaps the x2-enable key was 'stored' in the same memory 
area the actual modem code was; and it'd get 'wiped clean' on every re-flash. 
 I'll take the plunge... tomorrow.  :-)
