Hello Hal,
HW> What do you make of Socrates' references to his daemon?
DB> Greeks had the idea of the 'Muse', which was not a god, or an angel,
DB> but a rather impersonal robotic force with no motive; .........
HW> I had nothing devilish in mind. In the Republic, at 90a, it says
HW> "As regards the most important part of our soul we must think this:
HW> that a god has given it as a spirit (_daimon_) to each of us, that
HW> which we say dwells in the top part of the body, to lift us from the
HW> earth to its kindred in heaven, for we are not of earthly but of
HW> divine nature." quoted in Grube, _Plato's Thought_ p. 144.
HW> In the Symposium, 202e
Leafed through the "Symposium [202] ...seems a lot of effort
expended in trying to formulate "in betweens" [Diotimas]. I
would suppose that human thinking has some awkwardness in direct
connects with super superiors.....?
HW> "A very powerful spirit, Socrates, and spirits, you know, are
HW> halfways between god and man. ...They are the envoys and interpreter
HW> that ply between heaven and earth, flying upward with our worship
HW> and prayers, and descending with the heavenly answers and commandments."
HW> _Collected Dialogues_ (Bollingen, 1961) See also the Timaeus at 41.
HW> This doesn't sound much like robots to me.
Read [Timaeus 41 and 42]. Plato was as close to SciFi as an old
Greek could get, he was just limited to the vocabulary of his time
in making up and playing with custom life forms....
"....they were to be sown in the instruments of time, severally
adapted to them [42]......" robotic packaging ???
..."the gods of a more retiring nature" had me stumped?
The "heaven-man media" seems so pervasive as to be favored-to-find-favor
by careful placement among our genes. Calling this a "robotic" element
seems just updating the symbologies into our 20th century playpen (unless
of course, the old symbols are to ring absolute literal in a very REAL
God-Man interplay). Though we can tease the symbols around on a gameboard,
I don't see any *present* means to take a serious measurement. In such of
meantime, we are left to the (much denied) poetry of the genes ...a bent
of notions to hear in comfort as kids growing up in relay to some unknown
destiny of species (if any !).

P.S. Gave "Amos" his half hour! ..The imagination doesn't change.
If transpoted into todays world, many of the OTers would be
-darkish- fantasy fiction writers ....even to produce epic films-
(the OT being an equivalent). Years ago when I read the bible
through, it was all such a different cycle of documents-
......All then in the savor of religious feelings.....
