PJ> The birds are noisy, messy, time consuming, expensive, and
PJ> destructive. You need to choose well, as what one person may say is
I'm beginning to learn about all of the negative aspects. The
statistic of only 10 percent of owners keeping their birds is sobering.
I could tell from reading that parrots are sometimes demanding of time,
money, and attention. It does worry me that I might get a bird that I
would find was not acceptable to me for whatever reason. There are two
ads in the local paper from people selling what I know to be fairly
large birds and their cages, and I wondered why they were selling.
I would LIKE a bird that talks, but that isn't the prime expectation.
Playfullness is more important to me. Interaction between me and the
bird is important to me. I have a background in behavioral psychology
and I think I could manage to train the bird to some level of
interaction using standard behavior modification techniques. I got a
kick out of watching the birds in the PBS program playing with their
owners, and watching George Page's bird refusing to talk
on-camera at the end.
