There is more. A Memorandum: The National Wildlife Federation and
The Florida Wildlife Federation are both urging our Florida members
and supporters to vote "Yes" on the proposed Florida Constitutional
Amendments 4, 5 & 6 on Election Day, November 5th.
Placement of a one penny a pound fee on the Florida sugar industry
will be a more fair and equitable distribution of restoration costs than
currently required under state law. Passage of Amendments 4, 5 & 6 will
greatly assist us in restoring valuable Everglades fish and wildlife
habitats, provide enhanced public recreational opportunities and reduce
pollutant loading to the Florida Everglades.
Why we are supporting these initiatives? Because the Everglades is
dying. Three to five acres of Florida's Everglades are destroyed every
day. This precious ecosystem is the source of drinking water for 5
million Floridians (not to mention the millions of flora a other fauna)
and supports over 365,000 Florida jobs and a $13-billion a year tourist
industry.
Who pays the penny per pound fee? Will it eventually be passe on to
the consumers of Florida? The penny-a-pound fee will be difficult to
pass to consumers due to the competitive nature of the sugar market.
Florida growers must compete against sugarcane from other areas of the
country, as well as Midwestern sugar beet growers. And if the fee is
imposed on Florida sugar growers, they will still thrive because of the
federal sugar price support program.

THANKS YOU
I would like to add that "Big Sugar" as it is called around here is
inundating our video airways with sob stories about "all the jobs that
will be lost". Would you listen to that? They are telling us that if
we make them pay for their pollution, they are going to fire workers!!!
I don't think so -- not unless these "fat cats" are going out to clean
up the Everglades themselves. I'm betting they will be HIRING.
"HOW SWEET IT IS!!!!
Love your mother, -both of them - Andy
