I was using start.bat with XP for the last year and a half.  No problems. 
The fault lies with the fossil I changed to.  The newer versions of NetFoss
caused a problem, so by dropping back a version or two (two, I think), I
got rid of all problems except an occasional key bounce when using Qmodem
to access the game.  I'm still searching for the exact version of NetFoss I
was using when it worked perfectly.  Whoever said progress was a good
thing??

Hmm, why didn't I think of that? It never dawned on me to write directly. 
Oh, well, I understand that when you get old two things are lost: your
memory and something else, I forget....
