I manage desktop support for a large internet company; I have over 1500 users
under my care. I'm amazed at the condition laptops come back to us - screens
look like they've been used to serve pizza, keys missing, a years' worth of
muffin crumbs underneath the keyboard, cartoon stickers on the lids -- I
suppose people don't want their kids touching *their* computers, so they let
them loose on the company laptop, since we'll fix it.
We've stuck to the following cleaning tips with good results:
1. Screens - vinegar and water, or Windex. Use a non-lotion facial tissue
or cloth - never paper towels! Use canned air to remove any lint.
2. Keyboards - run a soft bristle toothbrush through the gaps in the keys,
while held upside down (preferably over a garbage can!) Then, back to the
air can for the final clean.
3. Remove stickers with GooGone or lighter fluid.
4. Simple Green for the keyboard and lid.
5. Alcohol wipe on the keys if you're feeling gracious.
I've had to do all these before I'd even work on a user's laptop!
One user keeps returning to us with missing keys, and has *no idea* how the
keys came off. Repeatedly. This laptop is covered with cartoon stickets. I've
started buying keyboard and charging them to his cost center automatically now.
Others have been absolutely *mystified* by the round, coffee-cup shaped break
in their laptop screens, apparently unaware that a $1500 laptop is not a drink
coaster for hot drinks.
I had another user decry the build of his laptop, claiming his Mac At Home
never had hinge problems. He walked in holding his laptop by the corner of the
screen.
I should post these stories to alt.sysadmin.recovery. :)
