As George Martin said, the Beatles could have whomever they liked play 
live, but for the recordings they would have a quality drummer...an area 
where Ringo was essential to the band's musical chemistry.

I recall some concert date, late 1963 I think, where Paul had to bow out 
of the performance due to flu, so for that night it was a threesome. But 
I don't think this happened more than once---remarkable, considering the 
band's busy schedule during those days.
