  Ivy-
     You are quite right on both accounts.  Before CB came along, the 10-Code
also served to prevent the casual listener from knowing what was going on. 
Maybe it was that "mystique" that was so attractive to the early CB crowd.
     I suspect it is the over-use of the 10-Code, in situations where it is
not needed, that turns off most Hams.  It is ideally suited to the dispatch
situation, but that is seldom the way Hams operate.  Comparison of the 10-
Code to Q-Signals points out that both are often being used as part of the
hobby, a sort of "slice of life" of CB or Ham Radio!
     Q-Signals originated on CW, where any widely understood shortcut will
greatly increase the speed of communications.  In my opinion, Q-Signals offer
little advantage to most phone operators.
