I disagree about the small screen unless we're talking about moving maps. 
Then I'd buy a quality reciever with external antenna - which is what I'd
buy no matter what - wire it into a capable mobile computer - such as the
one I am in the process of constructing - and put a decent high resolution
LCD monitor.  Perhaps the ones they have on the mobile DVD players.  Nice
graphics on those and lowpower consumption.  Either that or a good laptop
screen but ditch the rest of the laptop.  :-)

Yep.  You still have to know what you're doing.  Anyone relying on the GPS
unit alone to navigate for them isn't too smart.  They are a very nice tool
but demand knowledge from the user.  Not unlike computers, automobiles,
boats, planes, whatever we care to discuss.  Right?
