You know Greg ..
GG> Hmmm... that is typical... slot types becoming
GG> obsolete and all. Isn't there a ISA adaptor for PCI?
if there is, I don't know about it ..
And I'd *SURE* like to!
And if there is, I'm wondering about the issue of IRQ service to it and so
on. Another of the issues about PCI slots is that in some cases, more than
one IRQ can be assigned and used in a PCI slot, as opposed to the older
computer issues, mostly .. for only one IRQ per ISA slot. In the case of
the four port serial cards which plug into on ISA slot, they are special
hardware issue and components which allow the use of four different IRQ's
on one ISA slot. I've been using them for years in many different
telecommunications site applications.
As well, some of them actually have special drivers for OS/2 which allow
all four ports to share an IRQ, in theory. But that's theory. In the case
of these ISA cards for four comm ports to a slot, I've never been able to
get things working properly for the programs I'm using where I try to get
more than one comm port working per card in a give ISA slot. It has to do
with MB BIOS issues, driver design, and so on. You can share IRQ's between
cards in more than one PCI slot with OS/2 .. PROVIDED.. that the device
drivers are properly written and the code is properly written to support
that.
For example, in antique computer motherboards released by COMPAQ in
Houston, they were specifically released with MB BIOS, specific PCI card
design, to let the Adaptec 2940 SCSI controllers share an IRQ with the
other cards...
But don't try that without the specific Adaptec SCSI controller cards which
were furnished for COMPAQ and so on and so on.
Now .. if anyone here knows about ISA adapters from PCI slots, I'd like to
know the details??
--> Sleep well; OS/2's still awake! ;)
