I've been following the conversations going on in here lately, and decidedI'd
ask the opinions of those here....
Right now I have a 92 Chevrolet Corsica with a Clarion Tape player, Clarion10
Disc CD Changer, Clarion 4x6 plates, Clarion 6x9s, and AudioControl ESP-2on
the front 4x6 plates, and a Soundstream sa-164 for the 4x6 and 6x9s...
Thesa-164 is a 40x4 amp...
I also have a Soundstream Reference 700s amplifier hooked to two
SoundstreamSPL12s... I've had four of the SPL12s, and blown three...
According to theinstall shop the box is an ideal box for these subs...
The amp is supposed to be putting out 125 x2 at 4 ohms, 250 x2 at 2 ohms....
It is configured to run at 2 ohm stereo... With that setup three of thesesubs
have been blown... They create popping sounds when pushed in... Ibelieve that
these subs are suffering from amplifier distortion... The gainis NOT set
high... Possibly running the subs without the car running has beenthe
problem...
The first pair was blown when my alternator died, about 1-2 weeks after I
gotthe subs... The third sub was blown, I think, when I was running the
systemwithout the car running... The second pair wasn't pushed very hard...
Both amplifiers are being run off of the standard battery and alternator
forthis car... Do I need another battery for the Reference 700s?
What else could be causing these speakers to blow...
According to Soundstream these subs have a 300w rms rating, which I
shouldn'tbe exceeding in my current setup...
The shop owner has suggested that I add another pair of SPL12s, which
wouldhopefully appease my cravings for more bass and prevent so much power
goinginto a pair of subs... Would this be a wise thing to do, or would addind
abetter alternator or seperate battery help?
Thanks for your time, if you need more information let me know... Thanks
forthe suggestions also!

Michael Addison is asking about a subwoofer problem...

Hi Michael,
You had mentioned that the subs pop when you push on them.
Question...when when you push on them, can you feel them hitting
hard bottom?
If so, it is going to be one of two problems.
First, if you can check one when it's new, and it hits bottom, then
the drivers don't have a long enough excursion for your needs.
You would have to try a different type of driver that won't bottom out.
Second, if it only bottoms after you have used them for awhile, then
you have to examine the "spider". The wavey pleated cloth thats
attached to the center of the cone, on the back of the driver.
Push the cone OUT, and if the spider appears to be torn loose from
the cone, then the problem IS going to be a mistuned sub enclosure.
-
If you have the Thiele/Small parameters (QTS, VAS, FS), and the
size or dimensions of your enclosure, and the type of enclosure,
(sealed, ported, bandpass, etc) I can run the specs and tell you
what the system IS tuned to. Just an offer. Of course, it's up to
you.

Hello Matt!
Sunday July 21 1996, Matt Ion babbled to Greg Cobb:
-> I parted out a car for a mechanic a few years ago, and the T-60s and
-> associated crossovers were still in it (the tweeters had already been
-> removed). Right now they're in the rear deck of my 87 Accord (if you've
-> ever worked on one of these, you know it's a bit of a feat of engineering
-> to get those things in there!)
Heh! I'd hang onto those if I were you. The closest thing I've seen that
were close to those were the Cerwin-Vegas I have. Altec-lansing makes some
extremely clean speakers, but they just aren't hitting on the right freqs for
me.
And I'm familiar with the Hondas. I've had customers come in and want 6x9s
put in the place of the OEM speakers!
