It's not realy complex, the moment you mentioned the cable I probably knew
the anwser. It's very simple realy, I had the same problem here once I hooked
my PC to the ground. Yep, that's what we probably have here: a ground loop,
the one we all know and love.........to solve, that is... Although this
doesn't realy break the loop, it does filter out the 60hz (and it's
harmonics) hum. What you do is wire both of the cable's wires (the signal and
the shield) via a 330pF capacitor. (so you'll need 2 capacitors) like this:
-----| |------ shield 'ring'
| capaitors |
-----------| |--------------- signal tip
| |
-----|-------| |----------|------
You'll need to keep the wires short (as short as the cap's legs, preferably),
and close to each other, so not to break the shield.
Let me know if this solved you problems,
Bas
