We drove a van and road the rails with one of those trucks with the
hydraulic rail thingies where there was no road to drive on.  Basically the
idea was we had to drive in wooden stakes every 1.5kms along three ~500km
lines, two southnorth (one in Sask the other in Manitoba), one
eastwest (Sask and Manitoba).  We GPSed every stinkin' one of
those stakes and then some. Given that the target was buried between the
surface and 25-30kms beneath our feet, and the station spacing being
1.5kms, the accuracy of these stakes positioning wrt each other didn't need
to be as precise as your normal legal survey.  Hence the GPS since it saved
BIG money.
